Feds Testing Other Veggies For Disease
07-02-2008

Tomatoes were taken off the menu by many local businesses after a salmonella outbreak. Now, it appears some other veggies might be just as deadly.

Originally, the FDA thought the salmonella culprit was tomatoes. But in June, two months after the first cases and immediately following the pulling of some tomatoes from the market, 179 new cases were discovered.

The new facts have led the Food and Drug Administration to activate an emergency network of food laboratories for additional tests of vegetables usually served with tomatoes.

The FDA food safety chief Dr. David Archeson would not say which vegetables would be tested.

869 confirmed cases of salmonella have been discovered in an outbreak that has cost the tomato industry millions of dollars.
